Encounter-specific Details, Actions and Tactics
This is an Influence encounter - where the party make checks in an order they choose (though everyone must act before anyone can act again) in order to Influence the target. Targets for Influence encounters have a different kind of statblock, which describes their motivations, skills that may perform more/less effectively that others, and how long it takes to influence them. More information on these is present on Archives of Nethys, but the essentials will be provided here.
A player can use their turn to Discover or Influence. If choosing to Discover, the GM makes a secret skill check with a skill of the players choice out of those listed under the "Discovery" section of the target's stat block. On a success, the player can choose to discover one of the following: The easiest skill to influence the NPC with, a weakness/resistance of the NPC, or one of their biases. On a critical success, you choose to discover two of these. A critical failure appears to behave as a success to the player, but they are given incorrect information.
If a player chooses to Influence, they describe the action they take to attempt to influence the NPC, then make an appropriate skill check with a DC based on the appropriateness of the action. For instance, a cowardly target may be more vulnerable to intimidation, or a target with specific interests may be more succeptible to use of an appropriate lore skill. Influence points are gained or lost depending on the result of the check, with a critical success giving the party 2 influence points, a success granting 1, a failure causing no change, and a critical failure causing a point to be lost.
Once the time limit of the encounter (usually a number of rounds) has elapsed, the number of influence points gained is compared to the statblock of the NPC to determine how the encounter will resolve.
In this encounter, the party has 3 rounds to gain 8 influence points, otherwise the Corrupted Scavenger attempts to eat them and begins combat (leading to a trivial encounter, but if the party slay the Scavenger they all become Sickened 1 at the start of the next encounter due to feelings of guilt (this is an emotion effect)). Once gaining 8 influence points, no time limit applies, and the party can either pass or try to reach 10 influence points to befriend the Corrupted Scavenger.
Room Description/Flavor Text
A series of stone chests lie dotted around this large cave, some seemingly being crushed by heavy rockfalls. The passage to the next room is visible, but blocked by a large grey-ish humanoid with a large, bulbous head and distended stomach. It appears to be standing next to a trough of some kind, and a corpse with no noticeable injuries lies a few metres behind it.
